Camera Time

I don't know if all of you saw what happened to my 35 mm camera a couple of months ago. It has gone to that great photo-shoot in the sky. So it looks like I'll be getting a digital camera. If you have been reading my blog, you may remember this diatribe against digital cameras. Bottom line: I don't like 'em, and I don't trust 'em. However, it appears that my desires are irrelevant. Finding a 35 mm camera is next to impossible, and in a couple of years finding film for one will be equally impossible. Does anyone have a digital camera that they like (if such a thing were possible), that they also didn't pay an arm and a leg for? Any help would be great.

Kodak has some good cheap ones that I found on Amazon. Amazon also has the customer reviews for all their products, so you can see what other people think. I think mine was originally around $250, but I saved up my Amazon gift certificates, and caught a good sale, so it was $125. I also did not try for the "latest model" which seemed like a waste of money.

Here's a list of digital camera's I've owned.

Kodak EasyShare 5.1 megapixels

Cannon 6 megapixels

Kodak EasyShare 8.1 megapixels

(If ya remember my comment on your "diatribe against digital cameras" post I drop my camera a lot.)

I'm getting ready to buy another camera possibly even today. Here's what I've found...

Anything over 5 megapixels is more than sufficent for the average camera user.

Optical zoom is waaaaaayyyyyy better than ditigal zoom. Don't be fooled by cameras that try to play up their 20x digital zoom. It's not real zoom and you can do better with whatever photo software you use. Optical zoom means the lenses in the camera are actually zooming in on the target. 4x optical works great for me.

(Microsofts Photo gallery is awesome & free. I hate, hate, hate Picasa but a lot of folks like it.)

So this go 'round I'm just looking for a camera with 8 megapixels, 4x optical zoom that uses SD cards as storage medium (because I have a ton of SD cards) because I'm just gonna drop this new camera the way I did the other ones.

However, I am saving, saving, saving for a Nikon D40 SLR. Seriously, I wish Mr. Right would come along so I could ask for a camera instead of an engagement ring!!

mine's a kodak easyshare c300 with 3.2 megapixals, and i agree with dana; don't go under five. 3.2 just isn't enough if you don't want grainy pics, especially if you are going to crop/fix them later. (which i do a lot) do a lot of research online for prices, because if you catch the right sale, you can save a ton of money. (i saved $100, remember?) i got mine at sears. usually, the places like office max and best buy have great stuff, but are pricier. happy hunting!

Ack! I can't imagine how you STAND a 35 mm! Digital is SOOO much better! I love mine, but I did pay rather an arm and a leg for it.

I got my Kodak Easyshare 8.1 megapixels for $79 during a sale & using an add from a competitor. Bestbuy, Target, & even evil, evil Wal-mart will price match.

I'm not finding anything over 3X optical zoom for under $100. Is 3X enough?

Yep!! I got sand stuck in my camera and haven't been able to zoom for about two years. I think my pictures still look great.
