My Grampa - or - How I Almost Became An Actress And A Scientologist

I was just thinking about my grampa today, and I was thinking about a particularly silly story.

When I was 18, I made a trip to visit the elderly people in my life in Southern California. It was my first trip back since we had moved from there when I was 12. While I was in town they were shooting the movie Swordfish with John Travolta and Halle Berry there. My grampa wanted me to go see where they were shooting, so he took me up there so we could watch. We found the place, and there were all these people milling about. My grampa started walking up to where they were filming, and we got to a place where there were all these extras dressed in SWAT uniforms, and I started thinking, I don't think we're supposed to be walking around back here. Well, my grampa is way ahead of me, and he's just walking around on their set! I start to whisper, "Grampa, I don't think we're supposed to be back here..." When the director starts shouting, "ANYONE WHO IS NOT IN THE FILM, GET ON THAT SIDE OF THE STREET!!!" I think he was talking to us...we were the only ones messing up his shot! I was pretty embarrassed. But my grampa wasn't bothered in the least. He just walked over to where the crowds were assembled to watch while I tried to melt down the drainage ditch.

The Sunday after that, he decided to take me to church. We drove up to this big old Lutheran church, but the parking lot was full, so my grampa parked out on the street. I get out of the car, and I start heading up toward the Lutheran church, when my grampa points to the door right next to me and says, "Okay Mary, there's our door!" I look over, and it's the Ventura branch of the Church of Scientology! "Grampa! We can't go in there!" I say in alarm. My grampa just laughs and says,"I'm just kidding, we're going to the Lutheran Church." HA! It still makes me laugh when I think about it. (Though I probably could have met John Travolta had I gone in there! If they meet on Sundays.)

That's a pretty funny story! I love how he didn't care bit that he was walking around on a "hot set". lol! Good for him.

Or maybe you could have met Greta van Susteren. My family is seriously addicted to Fox News Channel. Of all the scientologists in the world she's the one I'd most want to meet. If she wasn't available Jenna Elfman would be my second choice. :) Johen Travolta is way down on my "scientologists I'd like to meet" list. LOL!

really? john travolta is far down on your list dana? he's pretty high up on mine. not because he's supposed to be such a hotty (hello, he's as old as my DAD), but because he seems so genuinely nice. i would like to see if he really is.
and yeah, this story could ONLY happen in california, lol!

There's not many famous people that I want to meet anyway... They're not very interesting. :)

DC, it's funny that you would say that about famous people, because as much as I would like to be a famous actress one day, I would really hate all the schmoozing and brown nosing it would take to get me there. (Not to mention the boring award shows.) So I doubt I'll ever really "make it". Oh yeah, and I also live in Atlanta. Oh yeah, and I'm fat... On the other hand, we DO have Turner Broadcasting here...maybe I CAN get my foot in the door! I'll just pretend to be a rabid liberal. And also, I really like Jenna Elfman too. I think she's the one I'd like to meet. I mentioned John Travolta because he was in town shooting the movie.

And yeah, my grampa is really funny, and a teeny bit oblivious! I just found out, BTW, that he's not doing well at all. :( He's not responding to verbal or physical stimulation, and they're concerned about him (obviously). They'll check his meds to make sure the levels are right and go from there. I'll have an update when I know how he'll be.

there aren't that many "famous" people i'd like to meet either. they're mostly morons, and if i feel i need some of that kind of human interaction, i can go to walmart. :)
sorry your grandpa isn't doing well!! i'll toss a few prayers in the air, see if anything sticks.

So you'd rather hang with the Walmart crowd than the Hollywood set! That's very telling!

Just got a new email, and Grampa is in ICU with Pneumonia, and they'll run more tests tomorrow. He's already starting to come around though, so that's a good sign.

Okay, the truth is that WE are the Walmart crowd. It's a good thing we like them so much!
