A Reminder

They had a meeting at Jeremy's work today, and I thought this news was worth sharing since many of you have husbands/ brothers/ parents that work in an industrial environment. Last week a maintenance man that worked in the Mohawk (carpet) plant died in a terrible but very preventable accident. He must have been working his job for quite a bit of time, and thought "This job won't take me very long, I'll be in and out before anyone will need this machine." So he climbed into the machine without tagging it out first. Well, a machinist came by and needed the machine while he was in there, and fired it up, since there was no tag telling him not to turn it on. I cannot imagine the horror of what must have happened next. Please just remind those people you love that work in such an environment that the safety rules are there for a reason, and to never ever ignore them, even if they'll just be doing a job for a moment. It is never worth the risk, no matter how many times they have done a job without having anything happen. You never know when it will be "that one time" that something does go wrong. Love you guys.

That is so horrible! I feel for his family.

I'm glad my husband has a nice cushy desk job, where he tells me he eats bon bons all day ;)

Ooh! I want that job. I bet jobs like that don't come up much...once people get them, they don't want to leave them.

i have worked on a job that some one has died on. the prob is that there are some componies that "dont notice" the safty rooles not being fallowed for the sake of time and money. if you dont get your work done on time, they "frown" on it. then if you get hurt they say "well he didnt folow the safty procedure. we tought him. there right here in the SOJT. what a shame. see every one you should always folow the procedure." and then every one goes back to work and they "stop noticeing" if people are folowing the rools. you are under a lot of pressure to make production, and most people(almost all) are willing to take some calculated risks to get the work done. its a bad situation.

I know desk jobs can be stressful (mentally) but I think I would rather be in danger of a mental breakdown than be in danger of losing my hand or my life.

I absolutely believe that Bruce. Especially where Olin is concerned. At Shaw where Jeremy works now, they seem to be more sticklers about safety. Olin is just a plain bad situation right now. Jeremy's bro is still a roller there, and they are making him roll, be his own assistant, and drive his own tractor to get the rolls he needs, plus they expect him to keep his original production from when he had an assistant and a tractor driver. Um, yeah.

olin tend to be very reactive insted of proactive. they will start a program and not folow through. but they are far from the only place like this. i have seen some that are much worse.

I'm not saying that Olin is the #1 bad place to work. I believe there are worse. I'm just wondering where they could possibly be?

I'm with Timpani... give me stress over mutilation any day.

I've worked in situations where production is more valued than safety. Sadly it takes someone getting killed and then a huge lawsuit and court-ordered changes before anything happens. Seriously screwed up priorities! What happened to workers being a company's top asset?
