And So It Begins

Today I dressed Daniel in a plain gray long sleeved shirt and a pair of jeans, with a zip up hoodie over it. When I went to pick him up from school today, Daniel asked me, "Mom, do you know why I wore my hoodie all day?" "No," I replied, "Why did you wear your hoodie all day?" "Because," he said, "I was embarrassed about the shirt you made me wear. I was afraid that all the kids would laugh at me."

Why does my six-year-old son have a fashion sense? What's wrong with a gray long-sleeved shirt? Is it possible that I am embarrassing him already? I didn't think that was supposed to start for at lest 3 more years! Now we're losing teeth and getting a fashion sense all in 2 weeks' time! What misery is going to be left for me by the time he's 14?

Oh yeah - if he wants new/more stylish clothes, he's going to need a job, 'cuz I just bought him all he's getting for a LONG time!

Man, I so knew when I was a kid that we were the poorest in the school (or one of the poorest). I think that's why I moved to working class East Alton, where all the kids are poor! Or at least, more poor than well off.

I don't think I ever gave my parents grief about wearing what we had (except, every once-in-a-while, I would be put out because my older sister got all the new clothes, and I wore them 3 years later when they were worn and out of style) but maybe I'm giving myself more credit than I should. I'm sure my parents must remember differently. And yeah, there are more moneyed people at Daniel's school than there were in Roxana. Hm. I didn't really think of that before you mentioned it.

Mary your Gramma says that she used to wear dresses and panties made out of flour sacks. Gr Gramma Nina used to buy two bags of flour in a pattern that Muriel Dena liked!
I was always so glad when Debby Clark or the Cavanah girls cleaned out their closets and we got their handmedowns! My most favoritest clothes were handmedowns. In a way they still are. I just adore the Salvation Army on 10 for $10 day!
Tell Daniel that Great Grandpa has a couple long sleeved gray shirts! And he likes them! Come to think of it he has a hoodie too! It's gray with blue plaid!
I was always told that as long as it was clean and pressed I had nothing to be ashamed of! Of course I'm sure I made your Gramma feel bad on occasion! But I got even.... I dress her now!

By the way.... Please tell Daniel that we all love and adore him! And that we are proud that he has graduated to being a big boy who lost his first tooth! And who shared his 'Tooth Fairy' money with his little sister! That is some kind of little man! If I had to pick a hero it would be Daniel!
Give him a big kiss for me!

It was really sweet of him to share his tooth money with his sister. I forgot to put that up, and it's only fair to mention it. :) Thanks Aunt Kath.

Yikes! I really hope that my kids don't ask me that question! At 10 I would just tell my son that he's too young for the info at this time.

Don't feel bad, sweetie. Two years ago, I took the kids trick or treating, and I went into another neighborhood to do it, since there wasn't much trick or treating to be done in our neighborhood, so we had to drive. Oh, and I took a friend, Anne, with me. Anywho... I have to turn left off the highway to turn into my Dad's neighborhood. And it's dark out, right, so, I'm waiting for traffic to clear, and Dalynn says, "Mom, stop it, you're embarassing me."
Okay, I'm just sitting there, doing nothing, but waiting for an opening in traffic, so Anne laughs, and goes, "Okay Dalynn, what was she doing to embarass you?" And Dalynn says, "She's moving her head."
Remind me never to do such a horrible thing again, in the dark, where no one can see me, and crane my neck, apparatly looking for a break in traffic. Honestly, I can see why she was so mortified by the horror of it all. She was, by the way, 9 years old at the time. I didn't realize it starts so soon, either.
